Isis – Volume 01 Issue 06

My Rating

Rating: 4 out of 5.

“The Ominous Ooze!”

After being laid off from her teaching position at Larkspur High School, Andrea Thomas has decided to let the Egyptian Goddess Isis choose her next destination. After defeating the sinister false god Aten, Isis has retreated to her ancient dwelling buried near the great pyramids in Egypt.

Back in Larkspur California, Rick Mason and Cindy Lee have begun searching for the whereabouts of their missing friend and teacher. Where has Andrea Thomas disappeared too? Rick Mason decides it’s best to seek out Andrea’s mother in Fairfax, Missouri. Maybe they will find the answers they need in the show-me state.

Three days have passed since Isis has taken up residence in the sands of the Egyptian desert. A sudden battle has caught the attention of the guardian of Mother Earth. Isis takes flight to discover the source of the conflict. Southwest of Gaiza, the Egyptian military is engaging a large mass of purplish ooze. The blob moves, as if it is sentient, towards a platoon of tanks. Everything in the substance’s path is being consumed by some unknown biological process.

Can the magic of Isis stop the monster menace before it consumes the city of Gaza? Will the Egyptian special forces trackdown the source of the purple sludge? Has Rick Mason come to terms with his feelings for Andrea Thomas? Collect the series to find out!

Reviewer Notes

This was an interesting one for sure. In a nutshell, we get Isis battling what can best be described as the monster from the 1958 sci-fi/horror movie “The Blob”. I’m not sure if the creature is supposed to represent something more? In the movie the Blob was a metaphor for the growing threat of communism. Jack C. Harris gives some more feminism messages (which were popular in the 1970s). This time around, the messages are pointed towards the anti-woman culture of Egyptian and Arabian countries.

Be that said, I think there is some very cool art in this issue. The splash page alone is pretty awesome. I’m digging Mike Vosburg and Vince Colletta’s work in this. Did the camel really need to get eaten? Poor humpy.

One major issue I have with this series is it takes place outside of the DC universe. I’m not sure why though. We are six issues in and  there are no references to other superheroes or iconic locations. The television show is tied to Shazaam and Captain Marvel. Why not the comic book series? For me it just makes this series seem empty and alone.

I did enjoy this issue so I’m giving it a 4 out of 5 star review. It would have been nice though to see Isis interacting with other DC characters. Maybe something will happen in the next two books.
