“His Master’s Voice – Part 04”
Death has come to the gates of Velanger. Inside the walls Red Sonja and a knight named Urmas help prepare the citizens for the incoming shock. Nothing, however could prepare the panicked denizens for what would happen to them next.
Outside, the High Priest Thord Varg orders his catapults to begin firing salvo after salvo of bound human captives. Unknown to the defenders of Velanger, the sky above them would become dotted with their own friends and family members. Citizens and soldiers alike began to retreat back from the inner curtain wall as the bodies of living men, women, and children came crashing down upon them. Only the stoutest warriors could hold their positions as the bloody sight of human bodies exploding upon the gray stone walls and walkways became seared in their memories.
Velanger’s only hope came in the form of the famous black tar concoction made in the nearby temple grounds. No invading force has ever breached the city proper as the tar stood as a deterrent to those who rush the defenses outside. The searing heat from black mixture could melt flesh instantly upon contact. But where was the tar now? The cutes in which the liquid death flowed stood empty as the battle raged on both sides of the wall.
Will the ancient city of Velanger fall at the hands of the Vestfold Plague? Can the twin warriors Vil and Ve get close enough to Thord Varg to land a killing blow? Has the mysterious entity arrived to do battle with the high priest or rescue Red Sonja from a fate worse than death? Collect the series to find out!
Reviewer Notes
It appears that the Hyrkanian Harlot has some stiff competition this time, as a mystery assassin readies her sway. Look out boys, this blond is not what she appears to be. Is it better to be red than dead?
I had to shrug my shoulders at this issue. Did Torunn research siege warfare prior to writing the battle scene? Forget the crazy amount of supernatural soldiers mindlessly following Varg, who were the armies that went up against Velanger in the past? Apparently, a few gallons of hot tar wipes out all that march against the city? Give me a break.
Compared to the last issue of Red Sonja, the only thing I found of real interest here was the big reveal at the end. That, and seeing Big Red fold quickly when Vil and Ve’s lives are on the line. If you love the twins so much, why don’t you marry them. Hah! I’m giving this issue three out of five stars.
