“Morbid Fascination”
High noon, somewhere along a desert highway, the sun radiates a withering heat down upon the boys. A huge semi truck screams past them as they stand on the side of the road arguing over why they won’t get a ride. Who’s to blame?
Their thumbs go up once again as a subcompact Honda passes by them at cruising speed. A middle finger extends out the driver’s side window. Jimmy “Slither” Tilton goes into extreme rage. It’s been two hours and still no ride.
Fifty miles down the road the “Scare-mobile” comes to a stop in front of a greasy-spoon restaurant. A goth looking drifter exits the van with a jacket slung over his shoulder. All he can think is, he would trade his tribal tattoos for a good hamburger right now. Man, he is hungry!
Before leaving the stolen van, however, the drifter turns and locks the driver’s side door. He knows what’s in the back. Vampires are pretty nasty if they are waken in the daytime hours. His experience with another has taught him that. The sleeping girl must not be disturbed at any cost. Cain Van Zant walks toward the mid-century built diner.
Three hours later, somewhere inside a wooded area near the parking lot, Cain stands over a disembodied waitress. It was supposed to be a quick break for the woman. Cain had a sweet tongue and convinced her so. Now the middle aged woman lays in parts as he decides how to assemble his new gift for the sleeping vampire. He was an artist. A damn good one at that, and he will continue to kill for the vampire’s affections.
Will Burnsteel and the boys find the stolen Scare-mobile in time to save Scream Queen? Is there enough cellular network and graphical database memory to help pinpoint her location? Did they remember to buy AAA batteries? Collect the series to find out!
Reviewer Notes
Out of the four series that DC Comics published in the 1990, and which crossed over with each other (Scare Tactics, Night Force, Book of Fate, and Challengers of the Unknown), this one is my favorite. The comedy elements easily make Scare Tactics the number one pick for me. I would recommend this series if you are looking for an affordable horror themed DC Comics run to collect.
