“The Hell-Crawlers”

Poisoned! Dracula flees from battle as Quincy Harker’s wooden dart pumps an unknown toxin into the Vampire’s bloodstream. The Count has never felt pain like this before in either his mortal or Immortal lifespan. Before Dracula begins to take bat form, he backhands his mindless servant, Clifton Graves, with such supernatural force it sends the man flying across the room. With a sickening thud, Clifton crashes face first onto the oakwood desk near Frank Drake.

Hours later, a leather winged bat descends quickly down through icy mists concealing a small rural village north of London. Dracula has gambled his life on a cure that may, or may not, rest in the local physician’s office medical cabinets. The bat dives at full force towards a closed windowsill, Quincy Harker’s poison has burned all sensibility from Dracula’s mind. The Vampire’s savior, one Heinrich Mortte M.D., is busy examining patients with his daughter on the other side of the glass. In one grand entrance, the window overlooking the waiting room explodes inward from Dracula’s reckless abandon.

Back in London, Frank Drake, Taj, Rachel Van Helsing, and Quincy Harker have come under assault by a large group of children mesmerized by Count Dracula’s supernatural control. The vampire hunters are now trapped inside Quincy’s Rolls-Royce limousine thanks to Dracula destroying the electrical wiring in the moments leading up to their battle. Now the children Dracula dubbed his “Legions of Doom” swarm the entire vehicle with knives and other deadly hand weapons.

Will Edith Harker receive her father’s car phone call before the vampire hunters are slaughtered by the children of the night? What dark secret is Heinrich Mortte keeping from his daughter Adrian? Will Dracula convince Heinrich to retrieve his vampire projector device to raise an army of the undead? Collect the series to find out!

Reviewer Notes

Hot babe alert! Hot babe alert! Adrian Mortte is a honey, just saying. Keep your mitts off her, vampire scum!

This is by far my favorite issue in the Tomb of Dracula series so far. There is so much going on in this one. Demonic children attacks, deep dark secrets are revealed, even some vampire infighting. All is wonderful with Marv Wolfman and Gene Colan behind the wheel.

The vampire bats battling for control is my favorite part of this one. Oh, and the projector. How the hell does the projector do that? In any case, I’m giving issue eight of Tomb of Dracula five out of five stars.
