Reviewer Notes

Halloween is almost upon us and this year Marvel Comics has released a second one-shot book inspired by its infamous horror series Crypt of Shadows. Crypt of Shadows originally ran from 1973 through 1975, lasting for 21 issues. The first books featured reprint stories from earlier works, but to compete with the plethora of DC Comics horror series, Marvel began writing new material.

The original books included a multi-story format based on horror themes of that time. The characters were just average everyday people who found or stumbled their way into the various circumstances.  In this 2022 one-shot release Marvel has centered the stories around various heroes who already dwell in the supernatural realm. In my opinion this is a huge step up in making the comic more memorable.

As a Gen-X’er I know more about the older characters. This book had me doing some research as I had no idea who Brielle Brooks and Jake Gomez were. It’s nice to see there is a new generation of vampire hunters and werewolves on the prowl. Crypt of Shadows has these two and much more. Can you say Moon Knight?! Marvel even brings back characters from the Darkhold: pages from the book of sins comic book series.

If you like horror comics, definitely get this one. The art is top notch, the woke factor is at a zero, and some of the stories have potential spinoffs. I’m giving Crypt of Shadows 2022 5 out of 5 stars.
