Midnight Suns – Volume 01 Issue 02

My Rating

Rating: 4 out of 5.

“Part 2: Prophet of Doom”

Doctor Doom has arrived at Strange Academy in New Orleans to commandeer Zoe Laveau for his latest magical experiment, but the Midnight Suns have gathered in defense of the school. A battle appears inevitable, yet Doom has already lost before anyone casts the first spell. Agatha Harkness has spirited Zoe away to the ancient fortress of Transia, thousands of miles from New Orleans. With the young student safely out of Doom’s reach, Wolverine leads the defense against the Latverian ruler and his army of Doombots.

High above the surrounding countryside on Wundagore Mountain, Agatha begins to reveal the truth about Zoe’s past and her role in the coming apocalypse. Only those attuned to the mystical world seem aware of the approaching catastrophe. Worse yet, its origins stretch back thousands of years to Agatha herself. An ancient bargain involving the demon lord Valtorr has come due, and his insatiable hunger still demands a sacrifice.

Back at Strange Academy, Doctor Doom discovers that intimidation only goes so far when your opponents include mutants, witches, and vampire hunters. Can Doom withstand the combined assault of the Midnight Suns? How many magical artifacts does it take to get to the center of Doom’s armor? A one…a two…a three? Collect the series to find out!

Review

Things are definitely heating up in issue two! I’ll admit that I’m not completely up to speed on some of Marvel’s newer supernatural characters, so a little research is in order. That said, I really like the idea that using dark magic comes with consequences. Every spell has a price, and those mystical debts can eventually come crashing back into the primary dimension.

Doctor Doom also makes everything more entertaining. Throwing one of Marvel’s greatest villains into a gathering of mutants, witches, vampire hunters, and supernatural heroes gives this issue exactly the kind of chaotic energy I want from a title called Midnight Suns. The story continues to build upon the mystery established in issue one while expanding the threat into something much older and potentially much more dangerous.

I’m giving Midnight Suns #2 four out of five Doombots.
