Secrets Of Haunted House – Volume 03 Issue 06

My Rating

Rating: 2 out of 5.

Grave Situation…

In the modern streets of London stalks an old world vampire. Johnathan Trumbull, esq., to be exact. He considered himself quite the intellectual in the Victorian age, but this is the 1970s. How will someone of such a generation gap handle the food of today’s society?

Deadly Allegiance

Pete Kong and his gang of bank robbers lay held up in a New Orleans wine caller. In the next room one of their associates sits tied to a wooden chair. The man betrayed his partners in a double cross. There is $200,000.000 dollars at stake and the gang intends to find their stolen loot. Pete worked the traitor over with several punches but the fink wouldn’t give up the location of the money. It’s time to send for Mr. Black.

Valley of the Giants

They came from the North Sea to murder and loot. Their long dragon boat set fear in the hearts of English men all along the coast line. None could stand against the might of the Northman named Rurik. He was very skilled in warfare but his pride and arrogance would be his downfall. After slaughtering a village of fishermen an old Hag stood up to the Viking leader. “Giants will be the instruments of your doom!”. Rurik laughed at the jest. Soon enough, he would come to regret his arrogant nature.

Reviewer Notes

I came for the vampire story, I left with disappointment. What can I say about this book? I loved the cover art, I knew it was an anthology format, but what a literal waste of time. This is the first one of these random story books that left me feeling cheated.

The problem? The issue starts with the hosts Cain and Abel both competing with each other in front of a cemetery full of children. Their charge is to win a contest on the most scary tale. Destiny, the character, is the judge. My issue, the length of the first two stories are so short it made me literally say “who really cares”. The Viking story was interesting but it was too rushed. Why take up the reader’s time with stories that don’t make them care about the characters or the plot?

The editor doesn’t even end the book with a callback to the contest winner. Destiny as a character really sucks. I will quote the movie ‘There’s something about Mary’ – “Step into my office…’cause you’re f*ckin’ fired!”

This issue of Secrets of Haunted House gets a 2 out of 5 star rating from me. If the art was worse it would have given it a 1 star rating. Steer clear of this one.
