Werewolf by Night – Volume 01 Issue 01

Werewolf by Night – Volume 01 Issue 01

My Rating

Rating: 4 out of 5.

“Eye of the Beholder”

The passing hours felt more like decades to Jack Russell as he stood in the garden of Miles Blackgar. It was not by choice, for you see that when one is turned to stone, being a statue leaves very few options. But why can Jack still form thoughts?

In those old sword and sandal movies, the Gorgon named Medusa always finished the job. Marlene Blackgar, on the other hand, must have a limit to her mutant powers. As night turns to day and wolf turns to man, the stone form reverts back into live flesh. Now is the time to recover what has been stolen!

Will Jack Russell retrieve his father’s book or will the full moon get in his way? Does the Darkhold contain enough knowledge to cure Marlene’s father before it’s too late to try? Is a box of corn flakes the best spot to hide one’s valuables in the case of emergencies? Collect the series to find out!

Reviewer Notes

October is here and it’s time to review some classic Marvel horror titles. And what better place to start than 1972’s Werewolf by Night! I would like to note up front that the story in this issue is a continuation of a storyline started in Marvel Spotlight number two. It is not required to read the previous book, I just want the reader to be aware.

Werewolf by Night is a quintessential example of Marvel Comics art and writing style from the 1960’s all the way through to the late 1980’s. Mike Ploog is one of my favorite horror artists and continues to be even today. His stay on the Man-Thing and Werewolf titles alone has made him a legend. In my honest opinion of course.

The writing holds up even for today’s  audience. Please just ignore the bell bottom jeans and mood ring references. I’m only kidding, but…please remember when it was written. With all that I’m giving this issue a four star review.  Which team are you on, team Blade, or team Jack?
