Werewolf By Night – Volume 01 Issue 03

My Rating

Rating: 5 out of 5.

“The Mystery of the Mad Monk!”

Jack Russell finished a phone call with Father Joquez seconds ago. The priest was hysterical on the line. He claimed to have finished translating the mystical book known as the Darkhold, when his office began to fill with a deadly gray mist. Father Joquez pleaded for Jack’s help, then the line went dead.

Jack leaped into his friend’s Ford Mustang GT and sped off towards Tugunga Canyon. There was no time to lose as the second night of the full moon was about to begin. Jack only had a few hours left before the beast overtook him. The beast cared little for books or curses.

As Jack raced towards danger, elsewhere his sister Lissa accidentally eavesdropped on another phone conversation. Their stepfather had just admitted to a bookie his role in hiring a hitman to kill Jack and Lissa’s mother. The young woman retreated from the Malibu mansion in search of her brother. Tears and anger flooded her. She needed Jack, she needed to tell someone what she had just heard!

Will the Werewolf by Night be able to rescue both family and friends from a sinister new enemy? Where did the demonic minotaur calling himself Dragonus come from? Will the Mad Monk reveal more information about Jack’s Father? Will the beast care? Collect the series to find out!

Reviewer Notes

First things first. Ploog’s art in this issue is killer! Not only do we get awesome werewolf drawings depicting Jack and his father, we also get two creepy new villains. Dragonus is a sweet looking minotaur from the Dark Dimension. The Mad Monk is the scribe credited for combining the Darkhold scrolls into one complete volume. The script writer, Jerry Conway, also drops the first hints that there are consequences for reading the pages from the book of sins.

On a side note, if you are looking to buy Werewolf by Night No. 3, don’t get tricked by the online sellers. I saw a bunch of listings on Ebay advertising the minotaur character as Rintrah from the Doctor Strange movie. T’is a total lie! Don’t overpay!

I’m giving this issue 5 melting policemen faces out of 5.
